Lab 7: Observability

This is not the full assignment. The planned scope includes metrics, Grafana dashboards and alerts, resource management, health checks, and CI test reporting. See lab-overview.md in the course repository.

Release automation

Build on Lab 5's versioned production deployments: automate the GitLab Release record that teams previously created through the UI.

  • Add a release-tag CI job using GitLab's release keyword.
  • Publish only after production deployment and a meaningful smoke check, not merely a completed rollout.
  • Prepare the reviewed changelog entry for this version as an artifact; publish that entry, not the entire changelog.
  • Include the full image reference and successful deployment pipeline link.
  • Verify failure behaviour: failed deployment or smoke checks must prevent Release publication. Decide how to handle a retried release job when the Release already exists.

Version selection, tagging, and changelog review remain deliberate team decisions. Automatic version bumps, tag creation, and changelog commits are optional extensions; consider repository permissions and pipeline-loop risks.
